Practical Questions About Counselling

What happens in the first session?

The first session is a chance for us to understand what has brought you to counselling and what feels most important for you to explore. We will begin to look at the situation you’re facing and discuss how we might work together.

What if I process things differently or find some environments overwhelming?

People think, process and communicate in different ways. You do not need to arrive with everything clearly explained or expressed perfectly for counselling to begin.

Sessions can be adapted where helpful, including pace, structure and ways of working, so that the process feels manageable, supportive and respectful of your needs.

The aim is to create a thoughtful and collaborative space where you can reflect in a way that feels comfortable and sustainable for you.

What if I don’t have any idea what should come next?

That’s completely okay. Many people come to counselling feeling uncertain, stuck or unable to see clearly what they want from work or life.

Often the starting point is simply having space to slow things down, explore what’s been happening and begin making sense of things together.  You do not need to arrive with a plan or clear answers before starting counselling.

What if I don’t have much work experience yet?

You do not need to have years of work experience for counselling to be helpful.  Many people begin questioning confidence, direction or pressure around work long before they feel fully established in their careers.

Starting out, changing direction or entering professional environments for the first time can bring uncertainty and self-doubt too.

Alongside counselling, I have experience working in education and as a university lecturer, which gives me an understanding of some of the pressures people face while studying, beginning their careers or finding their place in working life.

Career paths and confidence do not always develop in straightforward or predictable ways. Counselling offers space to think things through at your own pace and begin understanding what feels important to you.

How often do sessions take place and when are appointments available?

Sessions usually take place weekly, particularly at the beginning of counselling. This helps create continuity and gives us space to explore things more steadily over time.

I offer a small number of morning, lunchtime and evening appointments to help sessions fit around working life. Availability varies, so you’re welcome to get in touch to check current options.

Sessions and Fees

Sessions are 50 minutes and cost £70. Payment is made by bank transfer prior to each session.

A small number of reduced-fee places are available for people in career transition, including students, people retraining and those returning to work. You’re welcome to ask if this may apply to your situation.

I offer a free 30-minute initial consultation so we can discuss what you would like help with and whether working together feels right for you.
